The Friday Cheat Sheet: World Cup, Rangers, Cowboys & More

The Cheat Sheet - all the sports news you need to win your day.

He said what?!?
"If Carmelo would really love to come here, we'd love to have him"
--Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki in an interview with 105.3 The Fan. Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony can opt out of his contract this summer. Dallas has a some cap space, Carmelo could be a fit. It's going to be a fun NBA summer.

World Cup
The US beat Ghana in dramatic fashion 2-1 in its opening World Cup match.  Clint Dempsey gave the US a 1-0 lead just 32 seconds into play.

Time to buy US gear like a scarf or a T-shirt or even a bikini. Trust me. You'll need it at some point during the month-long World Cup.

Today's schedule features Belgium vs Algeria, Brazil vs Mexico (I'll be at Si Tapas watching that one) and Russia vs Korea.

Rangers
The Rangers beat the A's 14-8 in a game that lasted three hours and 41 minutes.  At 35-35, Texas is back to .500 on the season but still trails the A's by seven games in the AL West.  Yu Darvish (7-2, 2.11) takes the mound for the the Rangers tonight in Oakland.

Texas Advances
Texas beat Louisville 4-1 in the College World Series. The Longhorns got great pitching from Parker French and Travis Duke. They'll play UC Irvine in another elimination game Wednesday night.

Texas Tech plays Ole Miss today in Omaha while TCU takes on Virginia.

Cowboys
The Cowboys start mini-camp today. It's their last get-together until training camp starts on July 24th in Oxnard. It looks like Kyle Orton won't be there. We've never talked this much about a backup quarterback's absence in offseason workouts before.

Speaking of the starting QB: Tony Romo has been held out of most offseason drills, so this mini-camp will be a good chance to see him get some increased reps.

Rookie Zack Martin got paid.  The team agreed to terms on a contract with their first-round pick reportedly worth just under $9 million.  Second round selection DeMarcus Lawrence remains the only unsigned draft pick.

Former running back Marion Barber was taken to the hospital for "mental evaluation".
